Almost 5,000 years ago, the Egyptians built the Great Pyramid at Giza in the desert near the Nile River.
Pyramids were tombs for Egypt’s rulers, the pharaohs. The Great Pyramid was built for the pharaoh Khufu. Completed in 2580 B.C., it took thousands of men roughly 30 years to build. At 449 feet (about 45 stories), it is the tallest wonder and consists of around two million blocks of stone, each weighing over two tons.
