Almost 5,000 years ago, the Egyptians built the Great Pyramid at Giza.
That is in the desert, near the Nile River. Pyramids were tombs for Egypt’s rulers, the pharaohs. The Great Pyramid was built for the pharaoh Khufu. It took thousands of men about 30 years to build. It was finished in 2580 B.C. The pyramid is 449 feet tall, or about 45 stories high. That makes it the tallest of the Seven Wonders. It is built from about two million blocks of stone. Each one weighs more than two tons!
