Almost 5,000 years ago, the Egyptians built the Great Pyramid at Giza in the desert near the Nile River.
Pyramids were tombs for Egypt’s rulers, the pharaohs. The Great Pyramid was built for the pharaoh Khufu. Finished in 2580 B.C., it took thousands of men about 30 years to build. It is 449 feet tall, or about 45 stories high. That makes it the tallest wonder. The pyramid is made of around two million blocks of stone, each weighing over two tons.
