Like the Great Pyramid at Giza, this wonder is a tomb for a powerful ruler, named Mausolus.
He did not live to see it completed, but his giant tomb has helped people through the ages remember him. Today, we use the word mausoleum, from the ruler’s name, to describe a large tomb. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus stood for more than 1,500 years, until an earthquake toppled parts of it. Humans did the rest.
