While the American colonies fought with Britain, the rest of the world did not stand still. Explorers visited lands never before seen by people from Europe.
In 1776, the kings and queens who ruled other European nations watched closely as the upstart Americans challenged the mighty British. France hoped to see its old enemy Britain defeated. The rulers of Spain and Portugal also had American colonies. They feared the rebellion might inspire their colonists to fight for independence.
