Wetlands are rich with living things. Each different kind of wetland is home to plants and animals that are made to live there. But no matter what kind of wetland it is, everything alive in it is always making or eating food.
Plants use the Sun’s energy—plus nutrients from the soil, water, and air—to make food. Some animals eat the plants. Other animals eat the plant eaters. This transfer of energy from Sun to plants to animals is called a food chain. There are many connections between different food chains. The result is a giant network of the plants and animals in any wetlands environment.
