How big could a single wagon train be? In 1843, Dr. Marcus Whitman led one assembly of 1,000 pioneers west on the Oregon Trail from Independence, Missouri, with more than a hundred wagons and a herd of 5,000 cattle. That’s a lot of people – and a lot of cows!
