Theodore Roosevelt lived through a period of great change. His life was framed by two wars. The Civil War started two years after his birth. World War I ended two months before his death.
The Civil War was fought with muskets and bayonets and officers on horses. World War I saw the introduction of machine guns, armored tanks, and airplanes. In the United States, the years between 1858 and 1919 saw a population shift from farms to cities, as people left farms to take factory jobs. Immigration also expanded the population greatly. Meanwhile, successful businessmen became richer and more powerful.
