Theodore Roosevelt was born into a rich New York City family on October 27, 1858. His father believed in doing good works. He gave money and time to many causes. He was one of the founders of the American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Every week, he visited the Newsboys’ Lodging House, where homeless boys could spend the night for five cents. He listened to the boys and took a personal interest in their stories. From his father, Theodore learned sympathy for those less fortunate than himself. Theodore’s mother was mainly interested in her home and family. She showered affection and attention on her four children. Despite his loving family, however, Theodore faced challenges in his early life.
