Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858. His family was rich, but his father believed in doing good works. He gave money and time to many causes. He was one of the founders of the American Museum of Natural History. He also helped found the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Every week, he visited the Newsboys’ Lodging House. For five cents, homeless boys could spend the night there. He listened to the boys and took a personal interest in their stories. From his father, Theodore learned sympathy for those who had less than he did. Theodore’s mother was mainly interested in her home and family. She showered her four children with love and attention. Despite his loving family, Theodore’s early life wasn’t easy.
