People kept coming to North America. The number of settlements grew. Most settlements along the East Coast were in British colonies.
A colony is a settlement ruled by a country that is far away. By the 1700s, there were 13 colonies. These original colonies would become the United States. The colonies are often grouped into three regions: New England, Middle, and Southern. Colonists in each region had their own lifestyle and traditions.
