The ancient Romans were a remarkable people. From a small city on seven hills, over time the Romans built the mightiest empire of the ancient world. Between 400 B.C. and A.D. 100, Roman armies conquered Italy, defeated the Greeks, and then took control of North Africa, Spain, the Middle East, and parts of Britain.
However, the Romans were not just soldiers and conquerors. More than 1,500 years after the Roman Empire ended, its influence continues in almost every area of our lives, including the letters of our alphabet, the words of our language, the laws that rule us, and the engineering and construction of our buildings.
Unfortunately, much of their ancient way of life has disappeared. Yet many clues have been left behind, giving us valuable information about the Roman way of life.
