The ancient Romans were a remarkable people. From a small city on seven hills, they built an empire. It was the strongest empire of the ancient world. Between 400 B.C. and A.D. 100, Roman armies conquered Italy. They also defeated and ruled the Greeks. Then they took control of North Africa, Spain, the Middle East, and parts of Britain.
However, the Romans were not just soldiers and conquerors. The Roman Empire ended more than 1,500 years ago. But traces of it are still seen in almost every area of our lives. It’s in the letters of our alphabet. It’s in the words of our language. It’s in the laws that rule us. And it’s in the design and construction of our buildings.
Sadly, much of the ancient way of life has disappeared. Yet many clues have been left behind, giving us valuable information about the Roman way of life.
