The United States was born on July 4, 1776. On that day, the founders of the country signed the Declaration of Independence.
It said that the United States was now its own country. It also stated that people had certain rights, or freedoms. Among these freedoms are “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” But it wasn’t that easy for the U.S. to become a free nation and get those rights. The British colonists had to fight a war to win them. The painting below shows a scene from that war. What rights would you fight for?
