What covers less than a tenth of Earth’s land yet is home to about half of all animal, insect, and plant species? What has trees 150 feet high and snakes as long as 20 feet? Where can you find insects as big as your fist? What is hot, humid, and gets more than 100 inches of rain every year? Any ideas? It’s a tropical rain forest.
Some of the world’s greatest treasures are found in tropical rain forests. Countless species of plants and animals live in them. They’re also rich in oil, rubber, precious metals, and more. Many of these resources already benefit us. They give us medicines, foods, and industrial products. More resources await us in rain forests. We don’t even know how many.
Tropical rain forests are beautiful and mysterious. So slip into your raincoat and rain boots. Let’s head out for a tour of the world’s largest gardens.
