The ancient Egyptians built a canal around a waterfall on the Nile River more than 4,000 years ago. Canals are used all over the world for transportation and irrigation.
Some canals – the Suez, for example – are built at sea level. Others, like the Panama Canal, are built through mountainous terrain and, therefore, require locks.
