The ancient Egyptians built a canal around a waterfall on the Nile River. That was more than 4,000 years ago. Canals are used all over the world for transportation and irrigation.
Some canals – the Suez, for example – are built at sea level, while others, like the Panama Canal, are built through mountainous terrain and, therefore, require locks.
Take a break from your busy schedule, and come on a world tour of some famous canals.
