Oceans give us so many things. It’s not just seafood and salt. Beyond food, the oceans give us oil, fertilizers, and even food for farm animals. Some ocean water is turned into water for drinking.
The ocean also gives us power. In some places, the tides are strong enough to run generators. For instance, in the Rance Estuary in France, there is a row of 24 tunnels. Each tunnel contains a turbine. Turbines look like fans, but with more blades. When the blades turn, electricity is generated. Rising and falling tides push water through the tunnels. That water turns the turbines and makes power.
Waterpower is important because it does not use up resources that take a long time to replace. When we burn coal and petroleum, they’re gone—and the skies are dirtier. Not so with waterpower!
