To land creatures like us, the ocean doesn’t seem like a great place to live.
You can’t ride a bike, bake a pizza, or even breathe there. To us, the ocean is just something that surrounds life on land. It usually supports life on land. Sometimes it’s a threat.
But the ocean is a whole world of its own. To the creatures that live there, land is as unfriendly as water can seem to us. To them, the ocean is home sweet home.
Many kinds of animals live in the ocean. Fish, sponges, sea anemones, and coral live there. So do crustaceans, which live in shells. Examples include crabs, shrimp, and lobsters.
Dolphins, porpoises, and manatees are some mammals that live in oceans. They breathe air, as land mammals do. That’s why they must go to the surface to breathe. Reptiles of the sea include sea turtles and sea snakes. They also have to surface to breathe.
