The people of the Northwest Coast believed there were spirits in all forms of nature: animals, plants, rocks, the heavenly bodies, rivers, wind, fog, and rain.
Most of these spirits were good and helpful. But some of them were evil and tried to harm humans. There were various ways of enlisting the help of good spirits and avoiding the harm of evil spirits.
