Tall peaks have moved us to do many things. Some folks write stories and poetry, while others make paintings and music. Some become religious. People have tried and carried out amazing athletic feats because of mountains. And lots of us just like to quietly enjoy mountains.
Mountains cover nearly one-quarter of Earth’s land surface. Some people live on them, and other people travel to visit them. Mountains are a refuge for plants and animals. They affect weather and climate. They give us water, and we mine them for silver, gold, copper, and other metals.
