Awesome. Majestic. Cool. These are words that people may use when they see the natural wonders of mountains.
For millennia, mountains have inspired us to do a lot of things: write stories and poetry, make paintings and music, perform athletic feats, pray, or just quietly admire them.
Almost one-quarter of Earth’s land surface is covered with mountains. Some people call them home, and others travel far to climb them or just look at them. They are a refuge for plants and animals. They affect weather and climate, give us water, and are mined for silver, gold, copper, and other metals.
