- from Mark Twain
In 1861, after his brief stint as a Confederate irregular (a soldier who is not part of a regular military force), Sam Clemens decided to head west with his brother Orion.
Orion, who had campaigned for Abraham Lincoln, had been offered a job as secretary of the new Territory of Nevada. Sam stayed out west for six years. By the time he returned, he had become Mark Twain. He also had become famous.
