It’s a safe guess that mapmaking predates writing, that it sprang from the human need to communicate information, and that the first maps were simple lines and figures drawn in the dirt with a stick or finger and were soon lost to posterity.
What historians know for certain is that by about 2000 B.C., Mesopotamians were drawing maps of towns, fields, and cities on clay tablets.
