Water covers about two-thirds of this planet. Fully 97 percent of Earth’s water is in oceans, as salt water. Two percent is stored in glaciers, ice caps, and on snowy mountains.
That leaves just 1 percent of Earth’s water for our daily needs. Most is hard to get to, but some is in lakes, rivers, and streams.
Earth’s population is 7.6 billion and growing. Meanwhile, our water is getting worse and dirtier. It is getting worse because of pollution and overuse. Global warming is also a factor.
Lakes are an important resource. We cannot take them for granted.
