Earth’s water is always on the move, surging down rivers, churning in oceans, and floating through the air. Sometimes, a little water stops to rest on the surface, and the basins where it rests are called lakes.
Lakes are bodies of water that have land all around them. Lakes are found all over the world, and sometimes they’re called “seas.” For example, the Caspian Sea, between Russia and Central Asia, is a lake. In Israel, the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea, which lies between Jordan and Israel, are also lakes.
Most lakes don’t last very long, in the scheme of things. After a few thousand years, they fill up with dirt and rocks, or shifts in the Earth’s surface empty them out. Then the water moves on to a new resting place.
