No two lakes are precisely the same, but most have at least four different habitats.
There is the life-rich shoreline, where sunlight can reach the bottom and help plants grow. Farther out, a lake can be divided like a birthday cake. The top two layers, where sunlight penetrates, teem with insects, plants, and fish. Meanwhile, little or no sun reaches the bottom layer, where decomposers wait patiently on the nutrient-rich floor for their next meal.
