This branch of government includes the Senate and the House of Representatives. Together, these legislative bodies are called Congress.
Congress does most of its work in committees. The Senate has 16 standing, or permanent, committees. The House of Representatives has 20. These include the committees on Agriculture, Education and the Workforce, Energy, Veterans’ Affairs, and Homeland Security. Select committees are formed to study a specific problem or issue.
