Heroes have character that includes honesty and courage. To have courage means to face danger bravely. Heroes may be scared, but they still fight for what they believe in. Some heroes fight for equal rights for people. A right is a kind of freedom.
Throughout American history, Americans whose ancestors came from Africa have struggled to be treated as well as white people. In the past, many were forced into slavery. Slavery is a system under which people have no choices. An enslaved person is treated as property and forced to work without pay. People fought to give enslaved people their freedom. After slavery ended, African Americans continued to fight for equal rights.
