Let’s go back in time to the Golden Age of Athens and take a stroll around the city. New buildings are going up all over the place. There are so many, it’s getting hard to remember what Athens looked like even a few years ago! Like those new temples and theaters, new ideas seem to be popping up everywhere.
In fact, the Greeks had been questioning the old ways of thinking even before the Golden Age. Many believed that gods and goddesses caused events to happen. But some people began to wonder if there were other reasons things happened. Philosopher means “lover of wisdom.” Philosophers like Hippocrates, Socrates, and Plato gathered in Athens. They studied the world in great detail to try to understand how it really worked. Their ideas had a powerful influence on scientists for centuries.
