Most flowers are total showoffs. Everything about them says, “Look at me! Smell me! Touch me!”
The bright colors, strong scents, and big, showy petals are all designed to attract attention. But whose? And why?
A flower has just one main job: to grow new plants. Some need help from bees, butterflies, and other animals, so they put on a “flower show” of color and smell to attract these animal helpers.
This flower show doesn’t last, though. Within days or weeks, the blooms are dead. The flowers open just long enough to do their one and only job.
