North American deserts are full of living things. But these deserts are very different from the Sahara.
There are no camels, ergs, or nomadic people. Instead, there are yellow brittlebushes and stark saguaros. There are speedy roadrunners and slow tortoises. People live on Native American reservations or in crowded cities.
Native Americans lived here first. They left rock paintings and other things that show us their civilization was advanced. This was thousands of years before Spanish explorers got there. Since that time, people from the East sometimes moved to the desert. Many came to mine desert minerals.
Let’s get ready to take a trip through this fascinating land. You will want to wear sturdy footwear. It can take hours to explore the cities. The desert is rocky, and sometimes full of spiky plants. It might rain suddenly, and nights can get cold, so take a raincoat and a sweater. Don’t forget a hat and sunscreen! Finally, be like the Native Americans who live in the desert. Respect the desert animals, plants, and land.
