“Eats like a bird” is an old expression that means someone is a light eater.
Whoever came up with it didn’t know birds. They are big eaters—in part because flying takes so much energy. A baby warbler can eat nearly its own weight in insects each day. Each species has its own diet, but as a group, birds will eat just about anything—berries, nuts, insects, fish, small animals—and even other birds.
