Statistically speaking, bike riding is extremely safe. In 2017, an estimated 66 million Americans rode a bicycle more than six times.
Yet each year, fewer than 900 people die in bike accidents (compared to 35,000 who die in motor vehicle accidents). While about 500,000 bicyclists visit emergency rooms each year, most of those injured are quickly treated and released. But taking some basic precautions can help all bike riders make those numbers even lower.
