In 1883, the first known U.S. cycling championship race took place in Springfield, Massachusetts. Within 10 years, bike races had bigger crowds than baseball games.
After 1900, cycling started losing fans. Football, basketball, and hockey were becoming more popular. Cycling sports started coming back in the U.S. after World War II. During the 1960s and 1970s, kids who had grown up on bikes invented new sports. Two big ones were mountain biking and BMX. BMX stands for bicycle motocross, and it’s based on cross-country motorcycle racing. U.S. cycling’s rebirth had begun!
