Asia is a continent of superlatives. Think of almost any adjective that describes geography. Add “most” or “-est,” and it will probably describe some place in Asia.
For starters, Asia is the biggest continent. (It has almost one-third the total land area on Earth.) It also has the most people. (More than half of the people on the planet live in Asia.) Think about elevation. Asia has the highest place in the world. It has the lowest place, too. Asia also has some of the world’s hottest and coldest places. Not to mention some of its wettest and driest spots.
All these places are in one of the five geographic regions of Asia. These include mountain systems, plateaus, and plains. They include deserts and freshwater systems. They also include saltwater environments. Each of these regions spans many countries. We cover all the regions. But we had to decide which of the many countries to cover. We used size, population, and what we felt you would be most interested in as our guide in making hard decisions among the diverse and fascinating nations of Asia.
