For ancient Greeks, sports were more than simply fun and games. They provided training for warfare at the same time that they honored the gods.

The Olympics were the most highly regarded athletic competition in the ancient Greek world. Fiercely competitive—and sometimes deadly—these games allowed only men to participate. Also, athletes had speak Greek and be of Greek descent. Athletes from every corner of the Greek world came to Olympia to participate.
