In 1607, the first permanent English settlement in North America was founded at Jamestown, Virginia. The success of this colony led the Pilgrims to set sail 13 years later on the Mayflower.
Other Southern Colonies wouldn’t be established for some time after Jamestown. As people from Virginia began settling further south and new proprietors took over, the Southern Colonies began to grow. They soon developed their own unique economy and culture that made them unlike the colonies to the north.
