In only a few generations, a few settlements had grown into busy cities with strong economies. Colonists set up many features of the life they had known in Europe.
Towns had courthouses, coffee houses, post offices, churches, markets, shops, colleges, and harbors. Weapons were stored in a magazine, or armory. In the meetinghouse, people discussed local laws and issues. Roads linked towns together. People traveled and traded between colonies. What could sometimes be a harsh and dangerous place had become home.
