Telegraphy didn’t come easy to Tom (as Edison began to call himself at the age of 15) because his hearing difficulties made him slow to pick up the dots and dashes coming over the wires.
Still, he was soon good enough to support himself at the job. However, Edison was not interested in making a career as a telegrapher. He wanted the chance to experiment with the equipment.
