Homo sapiens (“wise person”) first came on the scene about 200,000 years ago, when it was just one of multiple Homo species.
It greatly resembled a modern human, but it could—and did—meet other species that lived in the same places and were almost as advanced. However, Homo sapiens was the first modern human. The progress it made led to civilization as we know it.
