Welcome to Middle America, or the Midwest region of the United States. It is indeed in the middle of the country, between the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains. We call it the nation’s “breadbasket” because farmers here grow crops like wheat and corn. Thousands of years ago, glaciers formed the plains where these farms thrive today. The huge ice masses moved south across North America, poured into valleys, and smoothed out hills. When the glaciers melted, they left big areas of flat land and five giant holes along the northeastern part of the region. Melting ice filled the holes with water, creating the five Great Lakes.
