There are many amazing examples of ancient Maya life. These include palaces, temples, and plazas. But most of them weren’t found until the late nineteenth century.
That’s almost 1,000 years after the Maya thrived. What took so long? One problem was that much of the Maya land is hard or even impossible to reach. It’s full of dense rain forests and steep mountains. Also, the Spanish didn’t let foreigners travel in their colonies.
It was very, very hard. But many determined people spent years looking for the lost culture of the Maya. Thanks to them, a whole civilization was rediscovered.
