Talk about creepy. You’re walking along, and suddenly you feel a spiderweb stretch across your face.
You wipe your face quickly, trying to get all the stuff off you while looking all around for the spider. Is it down your shirt? Is it crawling up your neck? And how big is it?
Many people are afraid of spiders. Yet it’s hard to understand why. Most spiders are helpful. They eat insects, such as locusts and mosquitoes, that damage crops or spread diseases. There are about 35,000 spider species, but only a handful of them can cause death in humans.
All spiders are hunters, and they go where the food is. That means spiders live just about everywhere. They are underwater and on the world’s highest mountain. And, of course, they’re in your bedroom. But most are so shy that you’ll probably have a hard time finding one—unless you walk into its web.
