The American Southwest is beautiful. It has flat-topped mesas, steep canyons, and tall buttes (byoots). But its deserts are dry and hot, and that makes life hard. Still, Native Americans there have lived in harmony with the land for a long time. They respect it and use its resources well.
Long ago, they were nomadic hunters and gatherers. Over thousands of years, they became farmers in settled villages. Spanish explorers came to the area in 1540. Back then, thousands of Native Americans lived in separate communities all over. They were scattered around present-day Arizona and New Mexico. The groups had different languages and customs.
