The government collects taxes from your family. That's normal.
The taxes we pay are used for things like roads, schools, fire stations and parks. But what if a government leader said that if you paid more taxes you could do bad things, like lie or steal? You might not respect this leader much.
That’s kind of what happened under Pope Leo X. He was chosen to lead the Catholic Church in 1513. He got involved in long wars and big building projects. He needed to raise money to pay for them. So Leo X sold indulgences. If you bought an indulgence, you wouldn’t suffer for your sins in the afterlife. That's what the Church said.
