During the Renaissance, however, they were just popular shows for everyone to enjoy. Shakespearean theater was like today's blockbuster movies. They were full of action, jokes, and epic stories. Queen Elizabeth I was a big fan of the theater. The Globe Theatre was built during her reign, in 1599. Shakespeare’s greatest plays were first staged at the original Globe in London.
