People keep trying to make fake money. We use the word counterfeit for fake money.
This faking has been going on for a long time. When the Aztecs ruled Mexico, they used cacao beans as money. Cacao is used to make chocolate. Criminals would empty a cacao bean’s shell. Then they’d fill it up with mud. Fake currency can make people lose faith in money. Is it real or fake, they wonder. Governments have many ways to try to stop counterfeiting. They use expensive machines, paper, ink, and metals. All that effort has turned money into small works of art. It is full of details that are very hard to copy.
