For the California Indians who moved from a mission to a rancho, life was much the same.
Like their homes on the missions, living quarters on the ranchos were crowded and dirty, and as before, workers weren’t allowed to leave. They lived forever in debt to the Californios who had brought them in. California Indians provided the majority of the labor, such as herding cattle, tending gardens, and harvesting crops.
