If Marco Polo’s book came out today, it wouldn’t win any journalism prizes. Modern readers expect nonfiction to be accurate, detailed, and complete.
In Marco’s book, events are not always told in chronological order, and he gives very few dates. Sometimes he describes things he heard about but didn’t actually see for himself. Even so, you get a pretty good idea of the approximate route of his journey east.
